Why every kitchen is built around a triangle

Three things in a kitchen get used constantly: the sink, the stove, and the fridge. Draw a line between them and you get a triangle — and how big that triangle is decides whether cooking in the room feels easy or annoying.

Stand in your kitchen and cook something. Anything — toast, pasta, cereal. Now think about where you actually walked.

You went to the fridge. You went to the sink. You went to the stove. Then back to the fridge, probably twice, because you forgot the butter.

Those three spots are the whole kitchen. Everything else — the cupboards, the counters, the drawer with the batteries and one dead pen — is storage. The fridge, the sink, and the stove are where the work happens, and every single kitchen you have ever been in was arranged around them, whether the person who designed it thought about it or not.

The good ones thought about it.


The concept: the work triangle

Draw a line from the sink to the stove. From the stove to the fridge. From the fridge back to the sink.

You just drew a triangle. Architects call it the work triangle, and it is one of the oldest rules in house design — old enough that your great-grandparents' kitchen was measured with it.

Here's the rule, and it's a real number you can check with a tape measure:

Each side of the triangle should be between 4 and 9 feet.

That's it. Three sides, each one no shorter than about four feet and no longer than about nine.

Why not shorter than 4 feet? Because you need somewhere to put things down. If the sink is jammed right up against the stove, there's no counter to rest the hot pan on, no room to chop next to the water, and two people in the kitchen are constantly elbowing each other.

Why not longer than 9 feet? Because you have to walk it, over and over, carrying things. A 15-foot gap between the fridge and the stove doesn't sound bad standing still. Now imagine it while holding a full pot of water. Now imagine it forty times a week for ten years.

The triangle isn't about the shape looking nice on the plan. Nobody ever sees it. It's about the walking — the total distance a person covers to cook one meal, adding up across every meal anyone in that house will ever make.

The three points

The sink. The busiest spot in the room. Washing, rinsing, filling, draining. It usually goes in the middle of the triangle — between the stove and the fridge — because you go to it before and after almost everything else.

The stove. The hot one. This is why it wants counter on both sides: somewhere to set the pan down before it goes on, and somewhere to set it down after, while it's still too hot to hold.

The fridge. The one everyone uses, including people who aren't cooking. It goes on the edge of the triangle, near where you walk into the room, so somebody grabbing a drink doesn't have to cross the middle of a kitchen where someone else is trying to work.

That last one is the detail most people miss, and once you notice it you'll never un-notice it. Watch where the fridge is next time you're in someone else's kitchen. If it's buried in the far corner past the stove, watch what happens when two people are in there at once.


The three shapes it comes in

Almost every kitchen is one of three layouts, and each one makes the triangle differently.

Straight — the "one-wall" kitchen. Everything on a single wall. There's barely a triangle at all; it's more of a flat line. It fits where nothing else does, which is why you see it in apartments and basement suites, and it means more walking side to side.

Galley — two walls facing each other. Counters down both sides with a corridor between. This one is efficient, genuinely: the triangle is short and tight, and you can pivot from sink to stove without taking a step. The catch is that it's a corridor, so people walk through the middle of it.

L-shape — two walls that meet in a corner. The triangle wraps around the corner, which gives you more counter and lets two people work without colliding. This is the most common shape in houses for a reason.

Add an island and you get a fourth point to work from — but the island has to sit far enough away that the triangle still fits around it, not through it. An island jammed too close is the single most common way a big expensive kitchen ends up worse than a small cheap one.


Do it in the app

Open Tiny Architects Designer. This one is worth building rather than reading about, because the mistake is invisible until you measure it.

1. Draw the room. In the Walls palette, under Outside, pick Room Outline and drag a rectangle about 12 feet by 10 feet. That's a normal, unremarkable kitchen — not tiny, not huge.

2. Put the three points in, deliberately far apart. Open the Kitchen palette. From Appliances, place the Refrigerator in one corner. From Counters & Sinks, put the Kitchen Sink on the opposite wall. Then put the Stove in the far corner from both.

You've just built the kitchen most people would build by instinct: spread the three things out so nothing feels crowded.

3. Now measure it. Grab Custom Measure and measure fridge → sink, sink → stove, stove → fridge.

Look at the numbers. In a 12×10 room, spreading things into the corners usually gives you at least one leg over 11 feet. That's past nine. The kitchen that felt roomiest on the screen is the one that makes you walk the most.

4. Fix it. Move the stove along the same wall as the sink, with a Counter between them. Bring the fridge toward the doorway side. Measure again.

Every leg should now land somewhere in the 4-to-9 range — and here's the part worth noticing: the room didn't get smaller. Same four walls, same square footage. You only changed where three objects sit, and the kitchen got better.

5. Try the L. Swap in the L-Shape Counter so the counter wraps a corner, and put the sink on one leg with the stove on the other. Measure once more. The triangle gets tighter and you gain counter space at the same time. That's why the L-shape is everywhere.


Your turn

Measure your own kitchen's triangle.

Not on the screen — the real one, with a real tape measure. Fridge to sink, sink to stove, stove to fridge. Write down the three numbers.

Then answer three questions:

  1. Is every leg between 4 and 9 feet?
  2. Is the sink in the middle of the three?
  3. Is the fridge somewhere a person can reach without walking through the cooking part?

Now draw your kitchen in the app, exactly as it really is, with the real measurements. Then draw a second version where you've fixed whatever's wrong — same walls, same room, only the three points moved.

Most kitchens have at least one thing wrong with them. Including expensive ones. Especially expensive ones, sometimes, because a big room makes it easy to spread things too far apart.
